The first step after moving to a new home isn’t to unpack your first box—it’s to turn on utilities like electricity, water, and internet service. Fortunately, setting up utilities in Minneapolis is simple. Xcel Energy provides power and gas, and the city of Minneapolis handles water and waste. Quantum Fiber is your go-to internet provider for an ultra-fast connection.

How to connect to Minneapolis home internet

The Quantum Fiber network extends across Minneapolis. Our service area stretches beyond Columbia Heights and Robbinsdale in the north, and blankets Powderhorn and the South Loop District with ultra-fast coverage. Fiber offers download and upload speeds up to 1 Gig, with multi-gig speeds of up to 8 Gig available in some areas.

Enter your address to confirm the internet speed available at your new Minneapolis home. Our up to 1 Gig plans offer the bandwidth for simultaneous 4K video streams, games, and conference calls. Quantum Fiber plans are month-to-month, so you’ll never have to commit to an annual contract to lock in the best possible rate.

Before move-in day (ideally as early as two weeks before), set up your service so you can schedule the most convenient day and time for a Quantum Fiber technician to turn on the connection. An adult 18 years age must be home during the technician’s visit. You’ll receive everything you need to connect, including our 360 Wi-Fi® network with seamless coverage across your home.

Existing Quantum Fiber customers who move within our service area should call customer service at 833-250-6306 to transfer and set up their new accounts, including equipment returns and upgrades.

Turn on electricity and natural gas in Minneapolis

Couple researching how to turn on electricity and natural gas in Minneapolis

You can’t have a home internet connection without electricity. Xcel Energy provides electricity and natural gas, so you only need one account for both services. Xcel serves much of the Midwest and Central United States, but its headquarters is right here in Minneapolis. Whether you’re opening a new account or transferring service from your old home in their service area, the process is similar.

To open a new account at your home, click “Residential” on their Start Service page, enter your address, and follow the prompts. To transfer service, click “Residential” from their Minnesota transfer service page and enter your existing billing account number.

Open or transfer your account at least two days before your move-in day, as turning on gas service may require a technician visit while an adult is present at the house.

How to get water and sewer service in Minneapolis

Minneapolis city government maintains 1,000 miles of water mains across its service area. To connect to water and sewer, you’ll either need a copy of your rental lease or the deed or settlement agreement to prove you are the owner of the house. If you connect before the previous tenant or owner turns the water off, there’s no fee to transfer. It’s $80 to turn water service back on once it’s been shut off.

It’s simple to open a new account or transfer water service at the Minneapolis city government’s website. Have your lease or deed ready and enter your address using the link above.

Minneapolis solid waste and and recycling pick-up

New Minneapolis residents typically don’t need to take extra steps for trash and recycling pickup. The fees for these services are part of your water and sewer bill.

You do need to know when to put your cans on the street. Garbage and organics recycling (compost) are picked up on the same day each week, while recycling pick-up is every two weeks. To find your collection days, enter your address into the city’s Find my garbage and recycling pickup day tool.

Welcome to your new Minneapolis home

Now that the basics of power, water, and internet are secured, you’re ready to settle into your new neighborhood. Get out and enjoy everything Minneapolis has to offer, from our incredible international cuisine to cheering on the mighty Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium.
